The Rufous-tailed rock thrush is not very common nor widely spread across the Portuguese territory. The male is easy to identify due to its blue and orange colours and the habit to perch on top of large rocks.

Hard to distinguish from the other two smaller species from the Stercorariidae family, the cute looking Moleiro-pomarino (Stercorarius pomarinus) – the Pomarine Skua – is similar to the seagull but their flying and feeding techniques are much superior.

They frequently prey on seagulls and sea turns to steal their food. They spend their winter in the sea.

Originally from Africa this bird is one of the first non-native species to establish a wild population in Portugal. Smaller than a house sparrow the common waxbill is easily recognisable by its thick red bill and peculiar sounding calls.

This big and easily recognisable owl is not very common in Portugal having a very site specific distribution but stands out for being a very diurnal bird. Its big yellow eyes enveloped in light coloured feathers are quite characteristic.

This is the Common chaffinch, one of the most abundant birds on our forests, and many subspecies have been identified. Its song echoes early in the morning. The blue cap and bright orange are characteristic of the male. The beak is robust and well adapted to eating insects, seeds and fruits.

This is a beautiful large bird belonging to the Corvidaea family. They are quite sedentary, rarely leaving their breeding areas, and they are very curious, moving alert and stealthily so when you look they’re already there. I frequently spot one on the big jacaranda tree right in front of my window.

How deliciously beautiful is the plumage of the European golden plover. The sad whistling call signals its presence before we spot them. This species overwinters in Portugal and can be spotted on fallow farm land, sometimes gathering in large groups as seen in the region of Alentejo.

The european nightjar – is a crepuscular and nocturnal bird whose feathers perfectly conceal it against tree bark. Feeds on flying insects. This species is migratory, wintering in south and east Africa. It breeds between May and August, often laying one single egg.
