    This owl is commonly spread across Europe, preferring open farmed lands where they can easily spot and capture mice and other rodents.

    One of 100 bird species I illustrated as part of a series where I set out to draw 100 birds from Portugal. On that series I selected native birds and also birds that see Portugal as their home during their migrating journeys across Europe, Africa, and sometimes from further away.

    This series took me 22  months to complete and I have now selected some of my favourites to offer as A5 prints, a size similar to the original drawing.

  • Common Chaffinch

    Common Chaffinch

    Fringilla coelebs |Common chaffinch (EN) | Tentilhão-comum (PT)

    This is the Common chaffinch, one of the most abundant birds on our forests, and many subspecies have been identified. Its song echoes early in the morning. The blue cap and bright orange are characteristic of the male. The beak is robust and well adapted to eating insects, seeds and fruits.

  • Common Kingfisher

    Common Kingfisher

    Alcedo atthis | Common Kingfisher (EN) | Guarda-rios-comum (PT)

    The Common Kingfisher has nothing common looking in its appearance. With flashy blue and orange hues it digs its nests along river banks this is a shy species and likes to keep out of the sight of foxes and other carnivores.

  • Common Waxbill

    Common Waxbill

    Estrilda article |Common waxbill (EN) | Bico-de-lacre (PT)

    Originally from Africa this bird is one of the first non-native species to establish a wild population in Portugal. Smaller than a house sparrow the common waxbill is easily recognisable by its thick red bill and peculiar sounding calls.

  • Crested Tit

    Crested Tit

    Lophophanes cristatus | Crested Tit (EN) | Chapim-de-poupa (PT)

    This mostly resident species breeds in mixed-conifer montane forests here in Portugal, but it is nomadic in the winter. It breeds from March to June, forming a lifelong pair bond with its partner, and laying 5 to 7 eggs in each breeding season.

    Dartford warbler

    Curruca undata | Dartford warbler (EN) | Toutinegra-do-mato (PT)

    A typical warbler from the warmer areas of Western Europe and northwestern Africa, this small bird is seeing its population decreasing due to habitat degradation and changes in land use. In Portugal they are both native and resident.

  • Eurasian Bullfinch

    Eurasian Bullfinch

    Pyrrhula pyrrhula | Eurasian Bullfinch (EN) | Dom-fafe (PT)

    They feed on seeds and buds from fruit trees, being considered a pain in working orchards. This bright tangerine hue is seen in males, the females being beige and toned down hues.

  • Eurasian Eagle-owl

    Eurasian Eagle-owl

    Bubo bubo, Eagle-owl (EN), Bufo-real (PT)

    This is the biggest and most powerful of all the owls, although quite rare and shy. They can hunt mice, rats, ducks, hares and even seagulls. With its obvious ear tufts and large orange eyes, this large owl is mainly active at night.

  • Eurasian jay

    Eurasian jay

    Garrulus glandarius |Eurasian jay (EN) | Gaio-comum (PT)

    This is a beautiful large bird belonging to the Corvidaea family. They are quite sedentary, rarely leaving their breeding areas, and they are very curious, moving alert and stealthily so when you look they’re already there. I frequently spot one on the big jacaranda tree right in front of my window.

  • Eurasian nuthatcher

    Eurasian nuthatcher

    Sitta europeae | Eurasian nuthatcher (EN) | Trepadeira-azul (PT)

    Quite broadly spread across Europe, this beautiful specimen makes its nests on hollow tree trunks and uses mud to make the entrance smaller and more protected from predators.

  • Eurasian Wryneck

    Eurasian Wryneck

    Jynx torquilla | Eurasian Wryneck (EN) | Torcicolo (PT)

    This territorial species prefers open forest, and dry sunlit wooded pastures to breed and feed –  outlying on larvae and pupae of ants. The ritualistic head-swinging displays the male performs to catch its partner’s attention is at the origin of its curious name.

  • European golden plover

    European golden plover

    Pluvialis apricaria |European golden plover (EN) | Tarambola-dourada (PT)

    How deliciously beautiful is the plumage of the European golden plover. The sad whistling call signals its presence before we spot them. This species overwinters in Portugal and can be spotted on fallow farm land, sometimes gathering in large groups as seen in the region of Alentejo.
