Bubo bubo, Eagle-owl (EN), Bufo-real (PT)

This is the biggest and most powerful of all the owls, although quite rare and shy. They can hunt mice, rats, ducks, hares and even seagulls. With its obvious ear tufts and large orange eyes, this large owl is mainly active at night.

One of 100 bird species I illustrated as part of a series where I set out to draw 100 birds from Portugal. On that series I selected native birds and also birds that see Portugal as their home during their migrating journeys across Europe, Africa, and sometimes from further away.

This series took me 22  months to complete and I have now selected some of my favourites to offer as A5 prints, a size similar to the original drawing.
