Pterodroma madeira | Zino’s Petrel (EN) | Freira-da-Madeira (PT)

This is an endemic marine bird from the North Atlantic whose only breeding territory are the Madeira island mountains, above 1600 meters. 

Several threats to its habitat such as domestic herbivores destroying nesting areas, or the capture of egg and chicks by humans, rats and domestic cats, have led to its almost extinction. Since 1987 several actions have enabled its protection, although this is still an endangered species.

One of 100 bird species I illustrated as part of a series where I set out to draw 100 birds from Portugal. On that series I selected native birds and also birds that see Portugal as their home during their migrating journeys across Europe, Africa, and sometimes further away.

This series took me 22  months to complete and I have now selected some of my favourites to offer as A5 prints, a size similar to the original drawing.
